13th March 1996 is a day I will ever forget. It was the day that a man entered a school with the suspected intention of killing every pupil and teacher inside it during their morning assembly. A mistiming resulted in him instead entering the school gym where a classroom of 27 Primary 1 pupils (age 5) were just beginning their PE lesson with the PE teacher, class teacher and a teaching assistant. All but one of the children was shot/injured, 16 of the children died as well as their teacher, Gwen Mayor. The song ‘Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door’ was recorded with pupils from Dunblane Primary School to raise money for the Snowdrop Campaign which successfully campaigned for increased gun control in the UK. I’m thankful that after that ban we’ve never had another school shooting since.
Today I remember the ‘Bairns of Dunblane’. We’ll never forget you.
Those sweet faces lost too early. I’m thankful we live in a country where there is increased gun control! Never want to see anything like this again.
